Subnautica 2 Beginner Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Start

Just started Subnautica 2? These 10 tips will save you hours and prevent the most common early-game mistakes on Planet Zezura.

Subnautica 2 has launched in Early Access and the alien ocean of Planet Zezura is full of hidden traps for new players. Here are the 10 most important things to know before your first dive.

1. Cure Digestive Incompatibility First

Head 150m north of your Lifepod, find the Angel Comb, and interact with its pink bulb. Until you do this, eating native food harms you. This takes under 2 minutes and should be your first action.

2. Never Hit Wildlife with the Survival Multitool

Striking any creature with the Survival Multitool causes it to become permanently hostile and hunt you actively. Use the Scanner to study creatures, the Biosampler for DNA. Keep the multitool away from wildlife.

3. Craft the Standard Air Tank Immediately

+30 max oxygen. Requires Silver Ore. The extra dive time this provides is invaluable in the first hour and prevents constant near-death oxygen emergencies.

4. Scan Two Habitat Builder Fragments

You cannot build a base until you find and scan two Habitat Builder fragments from wreckage near your Lifepod area. Prioritize these early — your base is your survival anchor.

5. Build Solar Panels on Your Base Roof

Your first power source. Place them on the top surface of base modules. They stop working below 200m and lose efficiency at night, but for your first shallow base they're free and unlimited.

6. Build Two Storage Containers Early

Resources inside storage survive when you die. Without storage, a bad encounter means losing everything you gathered. Two containers is the minimum safety net.

7. Scanning Unlocks Everything

Scan every creature, object, and material you encounter. Scanning is the primary progression system — it unlocks blueprints, DNA modification options, and Databank entries.

8. Bases Can Flood and Collapse

Watch the hull integrity meter when building. Too many connected modules without support pillars causes flooding. Build Foundation modules and Support Pillars to maintain positive hull integrity.

9. The Collector Leviathan Does Not Stop Chasing You

Found roughly 20,000 units north of your starting area in the Sparse Plains. Unlike most predators, it pursues across biome boundaries indefinitely. Run for your base and seal the compartments — it cannot breach them.

10. Co-op Is Genuinely Powerful

If playing with friends, split roles: one person builds base, one scouts, one handles DNA and fabrication. Proximity inventory sharing means you can craft from a teammate's storage while standing nearby — no manual transfers needed.
