DNA Modification System Explained
Subnautica 2 brings back the scrapped DNA system from the original game. Here's how the Biosampler, Bio Lab, and Gene Augmentation Station give you biological upgrades.
One of Subnautica 2's most unique mechanics is the DNA Modification System — a feature originally cut from the first game, now fully realized on Planet Zezura.
The Three-Step Pipeline
1. Collect with the Biosampler
Craft the Biosampler tool and approach creatures slowly. Activate it to extract a raw genetic sample without provoking an attack. Works on fauna and local flora.
2. Process in the Bio Lab
Build a Bio Lab base module. Insert raw samples into the centrifuge to refine them into injectable genetic serums.
3. Apply at the Gene Augmentation Station
The Gene Augmentation Station injects the serum into your character. Modifications fall into two categories:
- Passive traits: Permanent upgrades that run in the background (e.g. Pressure Resistance, Night Vision from bioluminescent creatures)
- Active abilities: Manual-activation powers with cooldowns

Why It Matters
The DNA system ties creature encounters to character progression. Scanning and sampling everything you encounter isn't just lore-collection — it unlocks your build. The system will expand significantly as more creatures are added throughout Early Access.
